Affordable Counselling in Toronto (the "Service") is the provision of low cost counselling and psychotherapy services; providing advice, encouragement, coaching, awareness, spiritual counselling and personal development. This service is sponsored financially by each individually listed counsellor on a limited availability basis (based on available capacity in the clinic).
Scope of Practice of a Registered Psychotherapist
According to the Psychotherapy Act, 2007:
HPRAC Distinction between Psychotherapy & Counselling
“The practice of psychotherapy is distinct from both counselling, where the focus is on the provision of information, advice-giving, encouragement and instruction, and spiritual counselling, which is counselling related to religion or faith-based beliefs.” HPRAC: New Directions, 2006; Chapter 7, Regulation of Psychotherapy, p. 208. The College is not regulating counsellors or counselling. However, psychotherapy and counselling can be highly interrelated.
If you require assessment of a cognitive, emotional or behavioral disturbance, please consult with a Registered Psychologist.
If you require management of acute impairment, please consult with a Psychiatrist (for emergency access, use the Emergency Room of a Hospital)
The Service is restricted to individuals and couples who are suffering from financial hardship as indicated on our eligibility page. Proof of eligibility or continued eligibility is required to participate in the program. A maximum of 10 sessions are available per individual, couple of family at the lower rate. Additional sessions may be available using a sliding scale rate, but this will be assessed on a case-by-case basis depending on factors such as: Your continued need, previous participation in sessions and progress.
All sessions are pre-paid in Cash or Credit card. Provincial and Federal taxes are included in the price. You are responsible for coming to your session on time and at the time we have scheduled. Sessions last for 50 minutes. If you are late, we will end on time and not run over into the next person's session. If you miss a session without cancelling, or cancel with less than a full calendar day notice, you must pay for that session at our next regularly scheduled meeting. The voicemail has a time and date stamp which will keep track of the time that you called me to cancel. The only exception to this rule about cancellation is if you would endanger yourself by attempting to come (for instance, driving on icy roads without proper tires), or if you or someone whose caregiver you are has fallen ill suddenly. If you no-show for two sessions in a row and do not respond to my attempts to reschedule, I will assume that you have dropped out and will make the space available to another individual.
Eligible individuals and couples have access to a maximum of 10 Affordable Counselling Sessions at the lower rate. After 10 sessions the session cost returns to the regular Counselling in Toronto.com rate.
